The Division of Obstetrics is concerned with pregnancy and childbirth, and contains the Section of Reproductology and Endocrinology as well as the Section of Neonatology. To enable systematic learning, training in the field of obstetrics includes both lectures and clinical practice. Regarding research, we conduct basic and clinical research to answer questions arising from daily medical practice with the aim of producing research results that will contribute to improving medical practice. Our goal is not only to acquire knowledge and skills relevant to women, their fetuses, and newborns, but also to facilitate the development of professionals with the communication and other skills necessary to conduct research and practice medicine in ways that contribute to the improvement of medical care and medicine more broadly, while taking ethical considerations into account.
The content of lectures for medical students includes general obstetrics and neonatology. To facilitate the acquisition of knowledge and skills in these two areas, lectures also incorporate content from related disciplines, such as internal medicine, surgery, anesthesiology, and pediatrics, etc. Furthermore, our educational initiatives enable students to acquire knowledge, skills, and diagnostic experience as a Student Doctor by participating in medical treatment through the clinical training program, but also to develop the communication skills necessary to succeed in the medical field. In addition, to better accommodate individuals’ varying life plans, we have established a curriculum for training obstetrics and pediatric specialists that begins after only two years of initial clinical training.
We research to answer questions arising from daily medical practice with the aim of producing research results that will contribute to improving medical practice. Many women with complications such as diabetes, renal disease, and congenital heart disease, visit Tokyo Women's Medical University Hospital. We conduct research on infertility among women pursuing children and female infertility more generally, as well as on perinatal management and post-pregnancy prognoses. By examining cases admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit, the Section of Neonatology is conducting research on the establishment of management policies for improving neonatal prognosis. We also conduct basic research on pathogenesis and the creation of new management strategies.

The results of research in perinatal care and advanced assisted reproductive medicine have led to the development of new technologies and treatments, but many research issues remain to be addressed in areas where the etiology is poorly understood. In the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Section of Reproductology and Endocrinology, and the Section of Neonatology, our goal is to facilitate the development of professionals capable of conducting research and practice medicine in ways that contribute to the improvement of medical knowledge and practice for women, fetuses, and newborns, while taking ethical considerations into account. Our basic research includes collaborations with TWIns and the Basic Research Lab at this university.
