Tokyo Women’ s Medical University originated from Tokyo Women’ s Medical
School, which was commenced in 1900. YOSHIOKA Yayoi, the founder of Tokyo
Women’ s Medical University, adopted the concept of the primary mission
of Tokyo Women’ s Medical School as the founding spirit when she newly
established Tokyo Women’ s Medical College (TWMC) in 1952. The primary
mission was to educate students to become physicians having excellent knowledge/skills
and a mindset to serve sick people, so as to develop women who are mentally
as well as economically independent and would contribute to the society.
At the time of establishment, according to the university guiding principle,
“we intend to nurture female medical professionals who contribute to the
society and foster their professionalism through the pursuit of deep understanding
of medical sciences.”
In 1998, the School of Nursing was newly established for nurturing healthcare
professionals based on the founding spirit. As a school for those who intend
to practice medicine, our current mission is to give education to nurture
medical professionals and medical/nursing researchers who have refined
their personalities through the process of mastering knowledge/skills for
practicing best medicine. Always bearing the founding spirit in mind,
we are providing academic education to nurture female medical professionals
who can contribute to the society.
The university philosophy of our education/research/clinical practice to
accomplish the mission of Tokyo Women’s Medical University is “Sincerity
and Compassion”. Sincerity is the personal motto of the university founder,
YOSHIOKA Yayoi, which“represents the fundamental attitude which I always
have when I give compassion for patients (Yoshioka Yayoi-Den [Biography
of Yayoi Yoshioka]).”“Utmost sincerity”and“warm-heartedness (compassion)”
are required in all settings including education, research, and clinical
practice. Our university, our students and staff should act in accordance
with the university philosophy
“Sincerity and Compassion”.
