The Department of Gastroenterology of Tokyo Women's Medical University began as the Internal Medicine Division of the Digestive Disease Center, which was established in 1965. The basic concept of the Gastroenterological Disease Center is to provide the best medical care to patients with gastrointestinal diseases, transcending the boundaries of medical departments. The Department of Gastroenterology provides internal treatment for diseases of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, biliary system, and pancreas, with malignant tumors (liver cancer, stomach cancer, colon cancer, pancreatic cancer, etc.) accounting for about one third of all hospitalized patients. For these patients, we provide endoscopic treatment, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and radiofrequency coagulation therapy. Endoscopic treatment also plays a major role in the treatment of gallstones and gastrointestinal bleeding.
Thus, gastrointestinal diseases are one of the most common areas of internal medicine with a large number of patients. The Department of Gastroenterology of Women's Medical College is engaged in a wide range of research from basic research to elucidate the causes and pathophysiology of diseases to clinical research for the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic methods, as well as the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases related to digestive diseases. In addition, we are actively engaged in educating medical students on gastrointestinal diseases and training well-balanced physicians in gastroenterology.
We provide medical students with classroom lectures in the third year and practical training in the fifth year to understand the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases. In particular, we have adopted the "Student Doctor" system for ward training, and conduct participatory ward training. In addition, we also focus on the education of all medical personnel, especially the importance of team medicine and the enhancement of communication skills.
As for post-graduate education, we have established a flexible training system for medical specialists and supervisors in close contact with the departments and affiliated hospitals of the University, and are aiming for many trainees to obtain specialist training.
The Department of Gastroenterology is divided into four major research groups and conducts high-quality research in each field.
1) Upper gastrointestinal tract; We conduct a wide range of research from basic research on H. pylori to clinical research such as endoscopic treatment.
2) Lower gastrointestinal tract; We are mainly engaged on the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease and the establishment of new treatment methods.
3) Liver: Liver; currently focusing on the diagnosis, biomarker search, and pathogenesis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
4) Pancreatic and biliary system; We are conducting a wide range of research from basic research on chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer to clinical research on endoscopy such as ERCP and EUS for biliary and pancreatic diseases.

We are actively recruiting graduate students. Based on the above research theme, we will plan and supervise graduate students in basic research and global clinical research that can be fed back to clinical practice. Our teaching policy is not one-directional guidance from the supervising physician, but rather, we will have interactive discussions and place importance on independence.
