Endocrinology is concerned with diseases in which abnormal hormone action occurs either due to disorders of hormone-producing endocrine organs or due to abnormalities in the target organs on which the hormones act. Major diseases include hypothalamic-pituitary diseases such as acromegaly, Cushing's disease, prolactinoma, hypopituitarism, and diabetes insipidus; thyroid diseases such as Graves' disease, Hashimoto's disease, and thyroid cancer; parathyroid and calcium metabolism diseases such as primary hyperparathyroidism and osteoporosis; adrenal diseases such as Cushing syndrome, primary aldosteronism, pheochromocytoma, adrenal cancer, and congenital adrenal hyperplasia; gonadal diseases such as Turner syndrome; and genetic disorders such as multiple endocrine neoplasia. Our experienced staff members, who were involved in the development of clinical practice guidelines of the Japan Endocrine Society and are also members of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare's research groups on Hypothalamic-Pituitary Dysfunction and Disorders of Adrenal Hormones, provide medical care, education, and research for these diseases. Our educational policy is to train physicians who can analyze cases, conduct clinical research and basic research to provide the best possible treatment for any endocrine disorder.
After completing initial training and joining the Department of Endocrinology, residents will receive training in accordance with the new internal medicine specialist system at Tokyo Women's Medical University Hospital and its affiliated facilities, as well as training in the subspecialty of "endocrinology and metabolism/diabetes internal medicine" in cooperation with the Department of Diabetes and Metabolism. And we will also enable residents to obtain a specialist in the "field of endocrinology, metabolism and diabetes internal medicine" in the shortest possible time in addition to obtaining a specialist in the basic field of internal medicine. In addition, after obtaining a specialist degree or in the sixth year after graduation, they will return to the Department of Endocrinology at Tokyo Women's Medical University Hospital as much as possible to receive specialized training as endocrinologists and to be provided with opportunities to conduct case analysis, clinical research, and basic research to acquire the foundation to become a Physician Scientist.
1. to investigate the novel clinical parameter to perform the adequate glucocorticoid replacement in secondary adrenal insufficiency
2. to clarify the significance of glucocorticoid induced adiponectin production by adipocyte glucocorticoid receptor in secondary adrenal insufficiency with sick day
3. to investigate the regulatory mechanism for endocrine abnormality in Cushing’s syndrome
4. to develop the novel diagnostic parameter for primary aldosteronism and Cushing’s syndrome
