Obstetrics

About us

The Division of Obstetrics is concerned with pregnancy and childbirth, and contains the Section of Reproductology and Endocrinology as well as the Section of Neonatology. To enable systematic learning, training in the field of obstetrics includes both lectures and clinical practice. Regarding research, we conduct basic and clinical research to answer questions arising from daily medical practice with the aim of producing research results that will contribute to improving medical practice. Our goal is not only to acquire knowledge and skills relevant to women, their fetuses, and newborns, but also to facilitate the development of professionals with the communication and other skills necessary to conduct research and practice medicine in ways that contribute to the improvement of medical care and medicine more broadly, while taking ethical considerations into account.

Research

The results of research in perinatal care and advanced assisted reproductive medicine have led to the development of new technologies and treatments, but many research issues remain to be addressed in areas where the etiology is poorly understood. In the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Section of Reproductology and Endocrinology, and the Section of Neonatology, our goal is to facilitate the development of professionals capable of conducting research and practice medicine in ways that contribute to the improvement of medical knowledge and practice for women, fetuses, and newborns, while taking ethical considerations into account. Our basic research includes collaborations with TWIns and the Basic Research Lab at this university. Our research topics include: fetal oxygen dynamics using near-infrared spectroscopy; the use of endometrial cell sheets to elucidate the pathophysiology of implantation disorders; and the elucidation of prognostic determinants in very preterm infants using the Neonatal Research Network database.
