As part of our research, we are conducting research on the application of cell sheet engineering technology, which is one of regenerative medicine technologies, to the field of obstetrics and gynecology. Regenerative medicine is a category of medical treatment that actively uses cells to regenerate the functions of living tissues and organs that have become impaired or dysfunctional. The cell sheet is one of the generative medical technologies developed by the Institute of Advanced Biomedical Engineering and Science at our university, in which cells are formed into a sheet and transplanted to the affected area. Cell sheet engineering technology has been clinically applied to many organs and diseases, and basic research is being conducted with the ultimate goal of clinical application in the field of obstetrics and gynecology. These are mainly conducted at TWIns, where we can actively exchange opinions with graduate students of Waseda University's Faculty of Engineering, supporting our research from a different perspective than that of doctors alone.
Our current research is on creating a cell sheet using cells taken from the endometrium. Using this endometrial cell sheet, we constructed an endometrial-like tissue on a culture dish, and succeeded in creating a three-dimensional endometrial tissue consisting only of cells in an in vitro environment. In the future, we will implant mouse fertilized eggs on this endometrial cell sheet and proceed to elucidate the mechanism of implantation. Furthermore, once this technology is established, it is expected to be applicable to patients with endometrial disorders.
