Department of Infection Control, Division of Infectious Diseases

Overview

The Division of Infectious Diseases at Tokyo Women's Medical University Hospital provides consultation (clinical consultation) on the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases that have developed in patients undergoing treatment at our hospital. At the same time, our department provides nosocomial infection control services and outpatient care for HIV patients. Our department has established a system of medical treatment based on knowledge and research in clinical microbiology.

Education Details

- Appropriate diagnosis and differential diagnosis of infectious diseases based on clinical microbiological thinking and principles of infectious disease treatment
- Determination of appropriate treatment efficacy based on the pathophysiology of the disease
- Infection control in clinical practice
- HIV treatment in the outpatient setting

Research Details

Our department conducts a variety of research on infectious diseases with the goal of translating the results back to clinical practice. The development of new diagnostic methods for infectious diseases using molecular genetic methods such as next-generation sequencers is expected to be applied not only to the identification of microorganisms causing infectious diseases by gene identification from sterile specimens, but also to the selection of treatment methods and clarification of infection routes by simultaneously detecting drug resistance, molecular epidemiology, and other information. We are continuing collaborative research with the Department of Microbiology and Immunology on the relationship between changes in the indigenous microflora, chronic infection, and various diseases such as autoimmune diseases. We will continue to conduct research that will lead to a new paradigm shift in infectious diseases.
