The Department of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, as a medical support section, provides diagnosis and treatment through endoscopy. As the Endoscopy Room of the Central Laboratory, we perform 11,000 upper gastrointestinal (esophagus, stomach, duodenum) endoscopies, 5,500 colonoscopies, 600 endoscopic cholangiopancreatography, and many small bowel endoscopies and ultrasound endoscopies annually. The number of cases of therapeutic endoscopy performed annually is approximately 1,000, mainly for endoscopic resection of polyps and early-stage cancer, sclerotherapy and ligation of esophagogastric varices, and stone extraction for common bile duct stones. Recent advances in the field of gastrointestinal endoscopy have been remarkable, and image-enhanced observation that approaches the histopathological image and surgical-like submucosal exfoliation procedures are performed as a matter of course. Our hospital is one of the largest in Japan in terms of the number of cases, and we have the latest equipment to quickly and accurately diagnose and select the appropriate treatment according to the pathological condition. We receive many referrals, especially for severe cases and difficult-to-treat cases, and specialists in various fields are engaged in the treatment of these patients, making full use of their experience. In addition, we provide safe and high-quality endoscopic care in cooperation with internal medicine, surgery, and co-medical staff.
(1) Initial and second-term residents first learn basic endoscopic procedures using an endoscopic simulator, focusing on upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, and then take charge of actual examinations under the supervision of a supervising physician to master observation methods and diagnosis. They will also participate in case review meetings and research groups both on and off campus. Those who have completed a certain level of upper gastrointestinal endoscopy at the University and affiliated facilities will receive training in colonoscopy and ERCP. Next, they will experience therapeutic endoscopic procedures (hemostasis, mucosal resection, etc.) and learn image-enhanced observation and ultrasound endoscopy. They will obtain certification as a specialist of the Japanese Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
(2) As part of medical student education, lectures using audiovisual materials and practical training using an endoscope simulator are provided. In addition, we provide guidance to foreign trainees and to trainees of the female doctors' re-training section of the Career Development Center for Female Medical Professionals.
